Garbage is not always being a problem that always makes us confused. Instead, garbage can be used as our plant fertilizer. How? “Interior design 911” will gladly explain it to you. There are two techniques in making fertilizer from garbage. First is by digging a hole in your backyard. Of course this method can be applied if you have large backyard. If you have only the narrow one, you can exploit any used drum as the container, or it is usually called “Composter”. Before we start, the garbage should be classified the organic garbage, such as kitchen waste, leaves, food scraps, and so on, from non organic garbage.
Try not to mix organic material with milk because it can produce dreadful smell. Cut organic garbage into pieces by mincing them. It aims to quicken the process of the decomposition.
Before the garbage is processed, first prepare several used drums and 10-cm diameter PVC pipes. The length is suitable with the height of the drum. Hole the pipe by using nail that has been heated and hold it with pliers. Prick the pipes until you got many holes on the pipe. Put the pipe in the middle of the drum and give a holder on it so that it can stand (see picture a). The pipe functions as a channel for oxygen in the garbage and distributes the ammonia and H2S as the results.
Mix the garbage that has been minced with little soil. To quicken the process of decomposition, it will better to mix them with animal waste and bio-activator. Bio activator comprises microbe and bacteria that can accelerate the decomposition process and can be bought in chemical stores.
After all have been mixed, place them in the composter drum. The decomposition will take place for about 3 to 5 weeks.
Fertilizer that is ready “to harvest” will be dark brown or black in colour in the form of small grains and it feels warmer, approximately 40 celcius degree. Wait until the temperature becomes a little bit cooler before it is used. If it is used directly, the plants will be wilted.
